Business Development Leadership

We take the seat, not just the meeting.

Most consultancies hand over a strategy and leave you to run it. Bamboo Agency takes the lead role in your business development itself: setting the direction, building the pipeline, and closing the deals. For businesses entering Australia, or carrying a leadership gap they aren't ready to fill permanently.

Two ways it runs

Selling on our own, or leading your team

Solo

We are the business development function

Bamboo Agency leads business development on its own: sourcing, meeting and closing deals for you. Suited to businesses with no local commercial team yet, or a technical team that needs someone in front of the market.

Titles typically used

  • Director of Business Development
  • Head of Business Development
  • Business Development Director, Australia
  • Senior Adviser, Business Development

Typical term

  • 6 to 18 months
Leading your team

We lead the people you already have

Bamboo Agency sells alongside your team, with that team reporting to the Bamboo Agency lead. On top of our own selling, this covers setting targets, developing the team, running pipeline reviews and reporting back to you.

Titles typically used

  • Country Manager, Australia
  • General Manager, Australia
  • Head of Sales and Business Development
  • Chief Representative (首席代表), for China-based clients

Typical term

  • 12 to 18 months
Profiling runs underneath both

Whichever of the two you choose, the pipeline is built against a current picture of the customer rather than an inherited one. Customer profiling is standing work inside a leadership engagement, revisited on a rhythm rather than settled once at the start, because a strategy aimed at last year's buyer is the most expensive kind of wrong.

A note on titles

The title is agreed with you and written into the engagement letter. We avoid "Director" or "Managing Director" standing on their own: in Australia those read as a company director appointed to the board, carrying duties under the Corporations Act. A functional title such as Director of Business Development gives the authority you want in front of customers without implying an office nobody has agreed to.

If a formal appointment is what you actually need, that is a separate arrangement, described below.

Optional add-on

Directorship

Some clients, particularly foreign-owned companies that need an Australian resident director, ask for the Bamboo Agency lead to be formally appointed to the board. We do accept these appointments. We accept them on terms that make the role survivable.

A formal directorship is not a title. It carries personal legal liability, and that liability attaches to the individual rather than to the agency. A director who cannot see the company's compliance position is exposed to all of it.

Insolvent tradingPersonal liability for debts the company takes on when it can no longer pay them.
Director Penalty NoticesPersonal liability for unpaid PAYG, GST and superannuation.
Work health and safetyOfficer duties that cannot be delegated to someone else.
No corporate shieldThe exposure sits with the person appointed, not with Bamboo Agency.

So the appointment is conditional on all five of the following. Not some of them.

  1. Directors' and officers' insurance In place before appointment and paid for by the company. Our own business insurance does not extend to a directorship.
  2. Deed of indemnity and access The company covers legal costs arising from the role, and the director keeps access to board papers after leaving, which is when they are usually needed most.
  3. Monthly compliance evidence Proof each month that tax, superannuation and payroll obligations have actually been paid. This is the condition that prevents the liability accruing quietly.
  4. Parent company funding letter Written confirmation from the parent that it will keep the Australian entity funded.
  5. Right to resign immediately If any of the four above lapses, the director may resign on the spot, without notice or negotiation.

How it is structured

Term
Minimum 12 months

A separate annual engagement. Resigning a directorship properly takes time to arrange, so short terms do not work.

Billing
Quarterly in advance

Invoiced ahead of the period it covers, separately from the business development retainer and commission.

Fee basis
Set by risk profile

How established and well funded the parent is, whether there are local employees, and what safety exposure the operation carries.

The directorship runs independently of the business development work and continues if that work ends. Where a company cannot meet the five conditions, we will say so early rather than late. That is usually more useful than a yes.

Smaller engagements

Strategic advisory, by the hour

Not every question needs someone in the seat. Strategic advisory is available hourly, priced by the session, for the questions that are worth an expert hour rather than an engagement. Listed roughly in the order they tend to come up.

Diagnosis and review

Market entry sense-check

Before you commit to a study: is this market worth the question, and is the question you have arrived with the right one? The brief that turns up is often not the one worth buying, and occasionally the answer is to fix a compliance or distribution problem first.

Business development diagnostic

A structured look at the whole function: targeting, process, people, tooling and what gets reported. Ends with the two or three things worth fixing first, in order.

Customer profile review

A check on whether the customer you are selling to still matches the customer you are describing internally, and what has drifted since the profile was written.

Revenue generation

Pipeline review

Your live pipeline, deal by deal: what is real, what has stalled and is not coming back, and where next quarter's revenue is actually going to come from. Usually the most uncomfortable hour, and the most useful.

Key account strategy

One account you are trying to win or grow. Who sits in the buying unit, what each of them is measured on, where the resistance really is, and the sequence of conversations that gets to a yes.

Pricing and proposal review

How the offer is structured and put in front of the client: where margin is being given away without being asked for, and what to change before the next proposal goes out.

Advisory also works well as a first step. A single session is usually enough to work out whether the right answer is a market entry study, a leadership engagement, ongoing profiling, or none of the three.

Considering a new market but not sure how deep to go? The market entry studies page sets out the three levels, and the brief questionnaire there is a useful exercise even before you decide.
